Manipur 7 Days Road Trip Itinerary

Manipur also is known as the Jewel of India, is endowed with some of the best gifts of nature. Almost every traveller to Manipur gets lost in its stupendous beauty. Though the real beauty of the tiny state lies in its villages and tiny hamlets. It feels nice to get lost in the forests of splendid charm and explore wildlife at its roots.

Here is my 7 days itinerary for a relaxing road trip through the heart of Manipur.

Day 0-1: Arrive at Imphal

Arrive at the capital of Manipur through train or flight and commute through the city to reach your hotel from where you can start your road trip. Visit the State Museum to explore the history, in the evening visit Govindajee Temple, the main Vaishnavite Temple of Manipur for the aarti.

Start your next day by visiting the Kangla fort, Saheed Minar, RCKS Art Gallery, Mapal Kangjeibung which is the oldest living Polo Ground in the world and the two WWII Cemeteries, don't forget to have a traditional Manipur style lunch and spend the rest of the day admiring the city.

Day 2: Imphal – Ukhrul (3 hours)

After breakfast, drive to Ukhrul – one of the most unexploited hill stations of India. This beautiful home of the cordial indigenous Tangkhul Nagas is situated at a height of 5, 453 ft above sea level.

The beautiful sights on the way to Ukhrul are a real treat for the eyes. On arrival, walk around the town and the market to see the activities of the cheerful local people.

If you like trekking then stay another day at Ukhrul and trek the heights of Shiroi Peak for breathtaking views of the landscape and greenery. Phangrei is another trekking route for the more energetic person.

Day 3: Ukhrul to Loktak Lake (4 hours)

Check out from your hotel and drive towards Imphal and further along the Tiddim Road. This drive has as its main destination the breathtakingly beautiful Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater lake in North East India and Manipur’s top tourist spot.

We can get a bird’s eye view of the lake from Sendra Island. Check in to the Sendra Cottage. In the evening, enjoy the breathtaking view of the hundred of lamps used for fishing on the lake.

Day 4: Loktak Lake and Keibul Lamjao National Park

Early morning, visit the core area of the Keibul Lamjao National Park, the world’s only floating National Park to see the Sangai, the brow-antlered deer or the ‘dancing deer’.

Before lunch, go for boating at the Loktak Lake to see the fishing activities, floating huts, and the migratory birds. This boat ride is a photographer’s and nature lover’s delight.

Post-lunch returns to Imphal.

Day 5: Imphal-Moreh

Today we will visit the Myanmar Border town of Moreh( 3-4 hrs drive). On reaching there we will visit the nearest town of Myanmar i.e Tamu after crossing the international border.

As Moreh is a small town you won't find many accommodations in this city. Stay overnight in Moreh or return to Imphal. I would suggest you return to Imphal as the next location needs quite a travel time.

Day 6: Imphal - Kohima –(138 km /5 hours)

Start early as the destination is quite far away but trust me you will enjoy every moment of it. It is about 137.5 km from Imphal to Kohima
Upon arrival, consider doing check-in.

Evening time is all yours, so don't miss to enjoy it at your own leisure. You can get outside the hotel to explore the nearby local markets and purchase some souvenirs.

Day 7: Excursion to Khonoma Village and Kohima World War- II Cemetery

Wake up early, board and head out to the Kohima War Cemetery after a scrumptious breakfast meal. The War Cemetery displays the supreme sacrifices of the Indian soldiers during World War II. Next spot is Khonoma Village, which lies roughly 21 km away from Kohima.

Get amazed by the lush greenery in the Khonoma Village and click hundreds of photos letting the emerald greenery be your background. Later, take your time to enjoy the evening in the village.

Day 8: back to home sweet home

Wake up early and head back to Imphal to catch your train or flight back to home.

I hope you liked my itinerary for this 7 days road trip across Manipur and I can't wait for you to share your experience of this journey. tell me on any of my social media accounts or just leave a comment. If you have a better itinerary please do share that too.
