13 Amazing Places To Visit In Jaisalmer - Golden City

Jaisalmer, Jaisalmer fort, travel India, travel tips, places to visit in Jaisalmer, 13 Amazing Places To Visit In Jaisalmer - Golden City, digital nomad, travel tips india, travel guide, travel hacks,

Jaisalmer, situated in the heart of Thar dessert also known as the golden city, home to hundreds of havelis and forts is definitely a destination for those who want to see the rise and fall of kings and their glory.

Jaisalmer is truly an amazing place to visit. The best time to experience the full splendour of the city is if you go during the annual Jaisalmer Desert Festival, usually held in early February or late January.

Here are 13 of my favourite places to visit in Jaisalmer.

1. Jaisalmer Fort:

Jaisalmer Fort, nestled amid the golden sands of Thar Desert is steeped with rich past and heritage. Displaying the brilliant craftsmanship, Jaisalmer Fort is one of the most renowned forts in the world.

The fort was built in 1156 by Rajput ruler Jaisal. What really makes it unusual is that it's one of the few living forts in the world. Thousands of people reside inside its walls.

2. Desert Safari:

In the midst of the soft golden sand, Jaisalmer evokes a vivid picture of sheer magic and the magical brilliance of the desert.

Most tourists take a camel safari—it's the quintessential Jaisalmer experience. A camel safari will also give you the opportunity to witness the rustic, rural desert life of India.

3. Jain Temple:

This group of beautiful temples within the Jaisalmer Fort walls have carved structures which depict pictures of sages, hermits, animals, etc.

Carved out of sandstone, the detail on them rivals that of the marble Jain temple complex at Ranakpur. You'll need to remove your shoes and all leather items before entering. The temples are open daily from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

4. Patwa Haveli:

Jaisalmer is also known for the mesmerising architecture of its magnificent historic havelis (mansions). Many can be found in the narrow lanes about 10 minutes walk north of the Jaisalmer fort.

In this area, the 19th-century Patwa Haveli is the city's biggest and most important one. Kothari’s Patwa Haveli is particularly impressive, with its breathtaking intricate stonework and artwork, and has been converted to a museum.

5. Sand Dunes and Desert National Park:

A rare desert area which lies just in the edge of Jaisalmer Desert National Park and is also rated as top 10 must-see tourist destinations in Rajasthan by Lonely Planet & Tripadvisor. These dunes are 42-45 Kms away from the golden city.

It's also possible to stay overnight close to the Sam Dunes in a unique, non-touristy experience by bunking at a desert camp for glamping. On the way to the Dunes, Kuldhara Abandoned Village is a spooky but interesting place to visit.

6. Sunset at Vyas Chhatri:

Vyas Chhatri, on the edge of Jaisalmer north of the Fort, is dedicated to the great sage Vyasa who authored the Hindu epic The Mahabharata.

The cenotaphs are referred to as chhatris because of their domes, which look like umbrellas (chhatris). Go there for spectacular sunsets over the city.

7. Badal Palace and Tazia Tower:

Situated at the beautiful Badal Palace complex, the five storeys Tazia Tower has its significance in Jaisalmer. Tazia tower is a replica of the mausoleum of various Muslim imams with intricate carvings on the walls of the tombstone that reflects rich ancient art.

The Badal Palace near the Amar Sagar Gate has a cloud-like appearance and has the Tazia Tower emerging from it. This tower is entirely different from the usual Rajputana architecture of Rajasthan.

8. Kuldhara Village:

Kuldhara Village, located around 20 kilometres from the Golden City Jaisalmer is one of the most interesting and intriguing attraction sites that you should absolutely include in your itinerary. The village, rich with its fair share of legends and myths, is said to be a spooky and haunted village.

9. Bada Bagh:

Bada Bagh in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan is primarily a cenotaph adjoining a garden, located about 6 km north of Jaisalmer, on the way to Ramgarh. The set of royal cenotaphs are basically chhatris of the Maharajas which once ruled the Jaisalmer state.

10. Gadsisar Lake:

Gadsisar Lake, also called Gadisar Lake, is a huge artificial reservoir built by Maharawal Gadsi Singh in the 14th century and situated on the southeast edge of the city.

The many small temples and shrines that surround the lake make it an inviting place to relax and spend some time. Boats are available for hire nearby too.

11. Nathmal Ki Haveli:

Nathmal ki Haveli is an ornate architecture in the heart of the city Jaisalmer which is otherwise known as the land of the Golden Fort.

The extraordinary exteriors dripping with carvings and the virtuoso work of the Haveli with two elephants made of limestone guarding the entrance is the sight that every visitor is privileged to see

12. Ladhruva:

16 km north-west of Jaisalmer is Lodhruva the ancient capital city of Bhatti dynasty of the 12th century. The old capital of Bhatti Rajput was once a flourishing city.

Although the town was ransacked by Muslim invaders, the prominent attraction of the city is its architectural ruins.

13. Pokhran Fort:

Balagarh fort was built by the Marwar Thakur, Rao Maldeo in the 14th Century, it is otherwise known as the Pokhran Fort.

Pokhran means the place of five mirages enclosed by sandy, rocky, salt ranges. Although a small temple made of red sandstone, the fort is dedicated to Goddess Durga.
