Viking's Travel Guide To Arunachal Pradesh
If you are looking for a calm, tourist-free ( for most of the season ), a bit untouched and a nature lover paradise Arunachal Pradesh is the perfect destination for you.The Land of the Rising Sun, Arunachal Pradesh has treasures of Buddhist monasteries, hills, lakes, bamboo bridges and scenic beauty waiting to be explored.
The ideal time to visit Arunachal Pradesh is between April to June as this is the time you will find the mountains covered in clouds and scenic view where ever you go.
So here is my travel guide to Arunachal Pradesh.
How To Reach:
By Air:
Tezpur airport is the most accessible and is located at a distance of 260 km. If this is not feasible then you can get to Kolkata or Guwahati airport and take a taxi to Arunachal Pradesh.
By Train:
Hartmut train station (Assam) is the nearest one to Itanagar. It is about an hour’s drive, estimated to 43 km.
By Road:
The connectivity with the tourist destinations of the surrounding states is excellent. The state transport and private buses operate on effective models and can be explored without any stress.
Best Time To Visit:
During summer from April to June is the perfect season to go for trekking or biking or camping. The temperature usually ranges from 20 to 35-degree Celcius.
Monsson is the most scenic season of the entire year. Clouds and rain just make the mountain even more beautiful. The temperature usually ranges from 18 to 29-degree celcius.
Winter has its own perks in the mountains. Gear up and stack your clothes and head out to enjoy fresh snow and a chilly mountain adventure. The temperature usually ranges from 8 to 14-degree celcius with snowfall in some areas.
Places To See:
Sela Pass - with a height of 13,714 ft, is one of the most visited places in entire Arunachal Pradesh. Considered to be heaven on earth, the Sela Mountain Pass in winter is entirely covered with snow. Before reaching this pass, the travellers are welcomed by another lake, which is known as the Paradise Lake.
Tawang Monastery - also known as the Golden Namgyal Lhatse, is one of the largest lamaseries of Mahayana sects. This is the second oldest Monastery in the entire world after Lhasa. With control over 17 Gompas in the region, this monastery is believed to be 400 years old.
Tawang War Memorial - a 40-foot high multi-hued memorial, has a structure constructed in stupa design. Dedicated to the martyrs of Sino-India War held in 1962, this memorial is nestled among beautiful peaks, which overlooks the Tawang-Chu valley. Popularly known as Namgyal Chorten, the memorial has names of 2,420 dead soldiers.
Pangang Teng Tso Lake - one of the most famous lakes of Arunachal Pradesh, is located at a distance of 18 kilometres from Tawang Township. Popularly known as P.T. Tso Lake, this lake is one of the ideal spots for a picnic. The word 'Tso' in Monpa dialect means Monpa. During the winter months, the lake remains entirely frozen.
Bomdila - is a small hill station that lies in the eastern Himalayas or in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. The place is popular among mountain lovers as it presents an individual with the best version of mountain scenario. The place also inhabits many spots to look forward like museums, monasteries, souvenir shops, etc. which attract the tourists from each corner of the nation.
Roing is a district headquarter of Lower Dibang Valley district - It is the last major township at the north-eastern frontier of India. Roing is derived from Adi word which means cool and refreshing.
Namdapha National Park - You will experience the rush of adrenaline while you are here. The park is covered varying altitudes from 200 meters to more than 4500 meters.
Itanagar is the state capital - and has a variety of attractions including Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary, The State Museum, Ita Fort, Polo Park, Ganga Lake and a lot more. The Wildlife Sanctuary is the home for different species like the goral, antelopes, porcupines, Himalayan black bear, langur and a lot more.
Dirang - It is a small town in the West Kameng District in Arunachal Pradesh. It is a must to visit this place, especially if you are a backpacker. You can experience the breath-taking valley view and also learn about various tribes who live here.
Apart from these, there are numerous other places such as Menchukha, Parasuram Kunda, Anini, Pasighat, Tuting, Daporijo, Chayangtajo and many more.
This list will never get to an end if I start naming all the destinations so I leave this to you to decide and do research where you want to go.
Things To Do, Adventures To Go On:
Rafting:
It is impossible that you visit Arunachal Pradesh and do not indulge in the adrenaline rushing activity of rafting. The rafting at Kameng River is meant for seasoned players.
Sela Pass:
If you have a motorbike, then this is the tallest point you can reach. Exploring it on wheels will be fun. You can check the huge number of lakes that you will chance upon this pass, which is considered to be pious by the Buddhist followers.
Camping:
Though you have multiple choices when it comes to camping here, the best is Daporijo. You can rest by River Subansiri and spend some quality time with yourself here.
Trek to Talle valley:
In this trek, you will be able to explore three more valleys, including Pangey Valley, Talle Valley, and Ziro Valley. The trek will expose you to some raw and scenic mountain valleys, streams and nature at its purest best. You will also encounter the local Apatanis people who guard the forests out of passion and belief.
Road Trip :
trust me one of the best states in India to do a road trip. the scenic view will greet you with a lovely smile with every turn and the people there are literally the sweetest people on earth and I had such a great time there on my road trip with my friends, so if you want a road trip itinerary please do leave a comment in the comment section.
What To Eat :
Though rice is the staple food of the state, what makes it interesting is that it is cooker either in a hollow bamboo or over coal which adds a distinctive flavour to it.
From vegetables to pickles to curries, every delicacy has a hint of the bamboo shoot which makes it mandatory for you to taste it.
The Apatani people make a famous kind of pickle known as Pika pil that is a result of bamboo shoot and pork fat.
Apong, which is nothing but rice beer, is a must-try when you go visiting the hills. Another locally made alcohol is the Marua which is made out of millet.
Sounds quite healthy, isn’t it? Then come the usual momos, thupkas and various dishes made out of meat.
so that is it, the best travel guide I could muster up in a short time. I missed anything please do point them out and if you want more particular posts on Arunachal Pradesh them leave a quick comment below or send me an email.
Keep travelling and exploring!.
