the Ladakh journey | stuck in mountains day 2 - Letters From A Nomad - travel blog

Welcome digital nomads, join me on the ultimate adventure that never ends. Each of our life is made up of our experiences and stories that define us. travel is not just about seeing the beauty of the place and an instagram post. Its a feeling, millions of stories of different people around the world, the experience and above all peace.

NUBRA VALLEY :
nubra valley, khardung la, mountains, snow, stuck on the road, road trip, forever nomad

We descended quickly and crossed the north Pullu checkpoint. The descent brings you down all the way to the river, and the sight invariably forces you out of the car in a bid and you just sit by the road and look at it.

A little further on we came across a big V formation, a mountain chain in the middle and riverbeds on both sides. The right side goes towards the Siachen. We took the left and soon we were driving through the dried up river bed itself towards Hunder, the place made famous by its sand dunes and the camels.

we stayed at Hunder that night in a guesthouse. We went to see a small lake speaking by Leh standard but it was just as beautiful and we had an awesome time there. There were Buddhist prayer flags all around the place.

The grassy shore tempts you into lying there and forgetting the rest of the world. It was soon time to go back to Leh. We were to leave for a 4-day trek and homestay at Rumbak village.

WE WEREN'T GOING ANYWHERE :

We reached the flat plateau just before the final climb to Khardung La by noon and immediately knew there was something wrong. More than fifty cars were parked there and there were signs of confusion everywhere.

There was another snowstorm last night and the road in front of us has collapsed which was pretty common for the people living there but all the tourist were in a great deal of tension.

As I looked around, I felt like we were a global village; there were people from around from seven to eight countries over there. Half of an hour had already passed and the next rumor flew in, the army had not been able to send their vehicle from Leh so we were pretty much stuck there for the night.

This brought a look of dismay to many tavellers but our group thought of utilising and capturing this moment by playing some cards and maggi and momos were ordereed with tea and pakoras.

We played the games for 5 hrs or so when the next pack of rumors came that the army had brought their bulldozers and the road was getting cleared up, but after an hour or so the army officers came to us to say that the work had to stop because it was too dangerous to work at night hence we were for sure stuck there for the night.

We decided to camp inside our van and went to sleep at around 1 am that night as we all were just having a random chat, you know when a group of unknown people come together who know nothing about each other so there is always more to share.

The next morning came with a bad news that another part of the road had collapsed and the work was delayed because of this. All the foreigners were getting restless as some of them had to catch the flight back and if they stay stuck there then they will miss their flight.

We all were also not feeling very well because of the height we had headaches and stomach pains so we were hoping that we would get out of that place by that nightfall.

We were in luck as the army cleared up the road by that evening at 5.30 pm. I guess that was the most I have ever been this happy and everyone else was also very happy as we could all be on our way.

Well, I couldn't help but think that in this life we all are just passenger meeting each other for a very small interval of time and then finally again be on our way.

The rest of the trip was very beautiful one, well we were after all in the paradise on earth so with a sad note I say goodbye but promise to come back again.
